TUCSON, Ariz. – Seattle University softball won twice on the first day of the Hillenbrand Invitational, hosted by the University of Arizona. The Redhawks beat Southern Utah, 9-1, in five innings before taking down New Mexico, 8-0, in six innings.
Shi Smith and Stefanie Madrigal both pitched terrific games, as each threw a complete game Friday. Smith struck out eight and walked none, while Madrigal hurled a six-hit shutout.
Utah Valley 4, Montana 3
St. George, Utah — Utah Valley University rallied with two runs in the top of the seventh to defeat the University of Montana, 4-3, at the Dixie State Classic on Friday at the Canyons Softball Complex. The Wolverines will also take on Utah State on Friday afternoon.
Basia Query went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs, and Siena Sandoval delivered the game-winning RBI in the seventh for the Wolverines (1-0) who won their season opener for the second straight year under head coach Stacy May-Johnson.
Brooke Carter pitched six innings and surrendered three runs on six hits and struck out six to earn the win. Devyn Cretz pitched around a pair of two-out walks and struck out a pair in the seventh to pick up the save.
Tristin Achenbach went the distance for Montana (1-5), allowing three earned runs (four total) on 10 hits and struck out seven.
Utah Valley 8, Utah State 0 (6)
ST. GEORGE, Utah — Devyn Cretz tossed a two-hit shutout and Linnah Rebolledo added three hits as Utah Valley University pulled away late with an 8-0, six-inning win over Utah State University at the Dixie State Classic on Friday. The win gives the Wolverines their first 2-0 start since the 2013 season, following a 4-3 win earlier in the day over Montana.
Cretz, who picked up a save earlier in the day against Montana, struck out seven and retired the final 13 batters she faced.
California Baptist 5, Utah 3 Game 1
UNLV 2, California Baptist 0 Game 2
LAS VEGAS – California Baptist softball took on Pac-12 foe Utah for the first time in program history this afternoon and defeated the Utes by a score of 5-3 in game one of the tournament before dropping game two to UNLV 2-0 in the nightcap. Brittany Galvez and Katelyn Mangrello led the offensive charge on the day accounting for all five RBI’s in the victory.
