Mustangs win another one-point affair against UAFS

Midwestern State hasn’t been able to win close games this season. That is unless the opponent is Arkansas-Fort Smith.

Courtney Murrell missed a free throw that would’ve tied the game for the Lions, and Pierre Sanders snagged the rebound to secure a 68-67 victory for the Mustangs.

This season, MSU improved to 2-3 in games decided by two points or less. The other Mustangs’ one-point victory this year was a 63-62 triumph at UAFS in December.

With the victory, the Mustangs ensured a spot as one of the top eight seeds when the Lone Star Conference tournament begins next Tuesday. MSU could secure one of the top four seeds and a bye to the quarterfinals at the Comerica Center in Frisco next week with a win over Oklahoma Christian and some help on Saturday.

Thursday’s game was a back-and-forth affair throughout, highlighted by five lead changes. MSU led for 20:01 while the Lions held the lead for 17:05. Neither team led by more than eight points in the contest.

Terrell Wilson led the Mustangs with 18 points, Sanders scored 14 points, and Amaechi Chukwu added eight points and 11 rebounds.

UAFS was bolstered by fantastic 3-point shooting. Matthew Wilson hit 5 of 12 shots beyond the arc to lead the Lions with 19 points, with Drew Miller adding 12 points on 4 of 9 shooting from long range and Murrell finishing with 15 points while hitting both his attempts from beyond the 3-point line.

MSU will celebrate senior day before its game against the Eagles on Saturday. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. inside D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
