Mustangs dominate inside in win over St. Edward’s

The last time Midwestern State played in D.L. Ligon Coliseum, they closed out 2021 with a historically bad second half in a loss to Texas A&M-Commerce, which led to an extended team meeting following the game.

The Mustangs saw the benefits from that team meeting on Thursday with a 72-58 win over St. Edward’s. The win evened the Mustangs Lone Star Conference record at 1-1 and provided a nice start at home in 2022.

“The meeting after the game against Commerce showed today,” MSU coach Christopher Reay said. “Ultimately, the belief in ourselves of execution and doing what we can control – that was the biggest message in the meeting. So we relaxed tonight and played.”

The Mustangs dominated in the paint against the Hilltoppers, with three post players scoring in double figures. Shawnisay Millar led MSU with 15 points while Hannah Reynolds added 12 points, and freshman Yasmine Sifaoui posted 12 points off the bench.

“We had a great spark from Yasmine and Shawnisay attacking their post players giving us great looks and allowing us to pull away down the stretch,” Reay said on the Lone Star Conference digital network. “Everybody played their role tonight. There was a lull in the second quarter where we went back to trying to hit the home run play every time, and once we went back to being patient and getting into our rhythm, that’s when we were successful.”

MSU returns to the coliseum on Saturday afternoon when they host St. Mary’s, scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
