Mustangs complete season sweep of Red River Rivalry

The Midwestern State Mustangs continued its recent domination of the Red River Rivalry with a 79-55 victory over Cameron on Saturday.

The Mustangs completed a season sweep of the series and earned their fifth straight victory over the Aggies behind a stellar defensive performance. MSU held Cameron to 18 of 50 from the floor using a combination of zone and man-to-man defense.

“The goal is to get your opponent uncomfortable,” MSU coach Justin Leslie said. “Sometimes, you need to keep it simple and give them one look based on the game plan, but against a team like this with young guards – if you give them the same look back-to-back, it makes decision-making easier for them.

“Our man and zone principles aren’t too far apart from each other, but we were trying to do enough to keep them off balance and hopefully lead to poor performance on the offensive end.”

John Weger had an impressive game despite only scoring five points. The senior from Muenster, Texas, led the Mustangs with ten assists while providing another solid defensive effort.

“John is really playing well for us right now. He’s been working hard and absorbing the game plan,” Leslie said. “He did a nice job today of seeing where the help rotations were coming from in advance, so when he attacked the paint, he had a plan and knew where he was going to go with the ball. He made nice decisions that helped us.”

The Mustangs face a tough road trip next week with games against No. 1 Lubbock Christian and Eastern New Mexico before returning home to play Dallas Baptist at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 8.
