MSU earns tournament-style win over Oklahoma Christian

The Lone Star Conference tournament begins next week. Midwestern State had a taste of tournament-style basketball against Oklahoma Christian on Senior Night.

The Mustangs made the defensive stops and converted their free throws late to secure a 67-62 win over the Eagles.

MSU will host UT Tyler at 7 p.m. in the first round of the LSC tournament on Tuesday night.

“It feels like we’ve been playing tournament basketball for the last month and a half,” MSU coach Justin Leslie said. “I challenged the team to stay in character and stay true to who they are because as soon as you go out of character and do things that are unexpected – that’s when you give up that run that breaks the game open. We sealed that game by executing well in the last two minutes.”

Jermane Carter led four Mustangs in double figures and posted a double-double with 18 points and ten rebounds. Pierre Sanders scored 13 points, Terrell Wilson added 11 points and Amaechi Chukwu totaled 11 points while guarding the Eagles best scorer, Drew Tennial. Tennial finished led all scorers with 21 points.

“Jermane was very good at keeping us involved in the game and finding a way to get some baskets. Down the stretch, it was nice to make our free throws,” MSU coach Justin Leslie said. “We have a hard time making shots every time we play Oklahoma Christian for whatever reason.

“Frankly, Drew Tennial is a tough guy for us. Our best guy to guard him was Amaechi Chukwu, and he struggled with foul trouble tonight. So it became a chess match of when to put (Chukwu) in the game to guard Tennial.”
