McMurry University Volleyball head coach Cammie Petree announced the 2020 schedule for her program on Friday afternoon, as the War Hawks are scheduled to open on Sept. 4-5 in Seguin, Texas at the TLU Bulldog Challenge.

McMurry finished with an 18-10 record last season, marking 13 straight seasons with a winning record. Furthermore, in her third stint as head coach, Petree has led the War Hawks to 17 straight winning seasons dating back to 2001.

Despite losing its two leading attackers from last year, graduating seniors Jordyn Burnell and Justice McGowan, McMurry returns a strong core of returners with depth at every position. Among the returners are American Southwest Conference West Newcomer of the Year Megan Martinez (middle blocker), and honorable mentions Lauryn Davis (setter) and Adile Leal (defensive specialist and libero).

“We have an outstanding blend of returners and newcomers this season, and are anxiously awaiting the day we can step onto the court as a team,” said Petree. “Once again, our goals are to create excellence both on the court and in the classroom, and to serve within our community.  With all of the changes that have taken place over the past few months, we are anticipating having to make some adjustments, but we are determined to remain positive in our belief that the best thing we can do is ‘change our minds about the change.’ In other words, we have the choice to either sit around and complain about everything that is changing, or we can ‘change our mind about the change’ and choose to be positive and move on. Let’s go!”

The 2020 volleyball season has the potential to be a historical one. Petree, a 2006 McMurry Hall of Honor Inductee, owns a career record of 443-276 and is six wins away from becoming McMurry’s all-time winningest coach in any sport. Hershel Kimbrell is the current leader at 448 wins as men’s basketball coach from 1959-1990.

The War Hawks open the season against the Concordia University Cardinals (Michigan) and the Schreiner University Mountaineers on Sept. 4, followed by University of St. Thomas (Houston) and Texas Lutheran University on Sept. 5. The tournament will be hosted by TLU.

The team’s home opener is slated for Sept. 8 against Dallas Christian. The first serve from Kimbrell Arena is set for 6 p.m. The War Hawks have eight home games scheduled, including five conference opponents.

The War Hawks travel to Dallas the following weekend for the University of Dallas Invitational on Sept. 11-12. McMurry will face Rhodes College, Louisiana College and U-Dallas throughout the weekend.

McMurry will host Arlington Baptist on Sept. 15 at 6 p.m. before commencing conference play on the road. The ASC opener is at Concordia Texas on Sept. 18, followed by a trip to Mary Hardin-Baylor on Sept. 19.

The ASC Crossover Tournament will be hosted by Sul Ross State on Sept. 25-26, with McMurry slated to face Louisiana College, Belhaven and East Texas Baptist, respectively. Last season, McMurry swept these three opponents by a combined set score of 9-1.

On Sept. 29, the War Hawks will travel across the tracks to take on cross-town rival Hardin-Simmons, with first serve set for 7 p.m.

The October portion of the schedule begins with four straight home games, beginning with Sul Ross State on Oct. 2 and Howard Payne University on Oct. 3. The War Hawks will also welcome Arlington Baptist for a non-conference game on Oct. 8, then will host HSU in Dyess Cup action on Oct. 14.

McMurry will then travel to UT Dallas for another ASC Crossover Tournament, as the team faces UT Dallas on Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. and LeTourneau on Oct. 17 at 2 p.m.

McMurry returns for its final home games on Oct. 23 and Oct. 24, welcoming UMHB and Concordia Texas to Kimbrell Arena. Start times are Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m.

The War Hawks close the season on the road at Howard Payne on Oct. 27 and at Sul Ross State on Oct. 31. The ASC Championship tournament is scheduled for Nov. 5-7, with the No. 1 seed from the West Division hosting.
