The Lone Star Conference announced the following athletes as women’s and men’s basketball Players of the Week for the week ending January 24th.
Women’s Offensive Player of the Week
Lexy Hightower, West Texas A&M, SR, Communications and Electronic Media, G, Amarillo, Texas, Amarillo HS
Lexy Hightower continued to power the Lady Buffs offense as they picked up a pair of home victories over Texas A&M-Kingsville to run their win streak to six games, moving to 8-1 overall with a 7-1 mark in LSC action. The Amarillo High product went 16-of-24 (66.7 percent) from the floor including 5-of-6 (83.3 percent) from behind the arc to average 18.5 points per game to go along with six rebounds (two offensive, four defensive), 11 assists and four steals. The senior moved into a tie for second place on WT’s all-time list of made three pointers with 214 while jumping three spots to eighth on the scoring list with 1,456. She has now scored at least 20 points in six of WT’s nine games this season.
Women’s Defensive Player of the Week
Juliana Robertson, Lubbock Christian, SR, Social Work, F, Kerrville, Texas, Tivy HS
Juliana Robertson led LCU defensively to a pair of wins over Texas A&M International, which ended TAMIU’s seven-game unbeaten run and extended the Lady Chaps’ home win streak to 83 straight games overall and 71 straight in conference play. Robertson, who averaged a +24.5-per-game plus/minus, opened the weekend series with 11 rebounds Friday and followed Saturday with a +30 in 22 minutes of action. The senior helped limit the Dustdevils to 12-of-40 (30 percent) from the field in the finale and just 40.7 percent (33-of-81) from the field over the two games. Her weekly totals included 7.5 rebounds (per game), six assists, three steals and a block, while shooting 66.7% from the field.
Men’s Offensive Player of the Week
Ricky Lujan, DBU, FR, Business Management, G, Las Cruces, N.M., Onate HS
Ricky Lujan helped lift the No. 15 Patriots to a pair of thrilling one-point wins over Midwestern State after averaging 22.0 points per game. In Friday’s 81-80 victory, Lujan led all scorers with 23 points, connecting on 6-of-12 shots from three-point range. With DBU trailing by two points with 1:04 remaining in the game, Lujan drew a charge on the defensive end, setting up the Patriots’ Chandler Jacobs to hit what proved to be the game-winning three-pointer. On Saturday, Lujan led DBU in scoring for the second straight time, pouring in 21 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field. For the week, Lujan shot 50 percent from three-point range (8-of-16) and was a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe.
Men’s Defensive Player of the Week
Chandler Jacobs, DBU, SR, Accounting, G, Missouri City, Texas, Elkins HS
Chandler Jacobs helped key a Patriot defensive effort that led No. 15 DBU to a pair of one-point wins over Midwestern State. Jacobs registered a team-high five steals (2.5 steals per game) and averaged 5.0 rebounds per game to help push DBU to a 9-1 record. Jacobs also averaged 15.0 points per game in the Patriots’ two wins.
