West Texas A&M 74, Oklahoma Baptist 50
The #22 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M tied the program’s single-game blocked shots record (16) while also forcing 21 turnovers on Tuesday afternoon as they raced past the Oklahoma Baptist Bison, 74-50 at the First United Bank Center in Canyon.
Four Lady Buffs scored in double-figures including new career highs by Jillian Sowell (11) and Jayla Burgess (12). The two freshman combined to go 9-of-14 from the floor including 3-of-6 from behind the arc for 23 combined points. Lexy Hightower finished the night going 5-of-12 from the field and 2-of-6 from deep while Abby Spurgin registered seven blocks to go along with eight points and seven rebounds in the win.
The Lady Buffs finished the night going 30-of-73 (41.1%) from the floor including 8-of-30 (26.7%) from behind the arc and 6-of-11 (54.5%) from the free throw line with 50 total rebounds (18 offensive, 32 defensive), 15 assists, seven turnovers, 13 steals and 16 blocks.
OBU was led offensively by Kayla Highfill who went 3-of-9 from the field and 2-of-5 from deep for a team-high eight points. The Bison finished the game going 20-of-66 (30.3%) from the floor including 5-of-18 (27.8%) from behind the arc and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line with 41 rebounds (14 offensive, 27 defensive), seven assists, 21 turnovers, two steals and six blocks.
The Lady Buffs hit the road for Lone Star Conference divisional action on Thursday night as they head to Odessa, Texas to take on the UT Permian Basin Falcons with tipoff scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Falcon Dome.
