LUBBOCK – Jake Krafka’s three with two seconds remaining gave St. Edward’s the 72-71 win over Lubbock Christian Tuesday evening in the first round of the Lone Star Conference Tournament.
St. Edward’s made a run late in the first half and led by 16, going up 38-22 with 2:51 remaining in the half on a dunk by B.J. Maxwell. LCU was able to chip away a bit of the lead, sending St. Edward’s into the locker room with a ten point advantage, 40-30.
Lubbock Christian was strong at the outset of the second half, evening the game 43-43 less than six minutes in. The Chaps led by four, 64-60, with just under four minutes remaining and was the largest lead of the half after the tie. Logan Cook hit a pair of free throws to cut the lead to two and Daniel Venzant’s layup tied the game once again with three minutes remaining.
LCU’s Lloyd Daniels hit a layup with 15 seconds remaining as the shot clock was winding down to put the Chaps up two, 71-69. SEU inbounded the ball on the sideline with just six seconds remaining after a pair of LCU fouls. Ryan Garza found Krafka in the corner who pump faked before hitting the game winning three. Lubbock Christian was unable to get a shot off in response as the Hilltoppers took the win.
Maxwell led offensively with 21 points with Venzant adding 17 and Krafka 14. Cook led with eight boards as SEU trailed 30-26 in rebounds. SEU got 33 points from three-point range, shooting 40.7 percent from long range in the win.
St. Edward’s advances to the semifinal with the win, facing Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday, March 5 at 6:45 pm in Canyon, Texas.
