West Texas A&M head coach Hunter Hughes announced the hiring of Andre Pope as the defensive back coach along with a number of promotions to his current staff.
“We are excited to have Andre and his family here in Canyon,” Hughes said. “I have no doubt that he is going to take our defensive back group to the next level just like he did at Shepherd and Avila. He also brings experience of playing at a high level during his collegiate career which will greatly help our student-athletes and coaching staff.”
Pope comes to Canyon after spending the past four seasons as the defensive back coach and recruiting coordinator at Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, W.V. During his time with the Rams, he coached four all-conference defense backs. Under his tutelage, the Rams also led the PSAC in interceptions during the 2019 season with 20.
He also spent five years at Avila University in Kansas, City, Mo. where he served as the defensive coordinator and defensive back coach for the Eagles.
Prior to making the jump to coaching, Pope was a two-time All-American on the gridiron for Fairmont State after being regarded as one of the best high school recruits in Maryland. He spent his last two years of eligibility at West Georgia playing both safety and outside linebacker.
Hughes also announced Will Wagner has been named the Defensive Pass Game Coordinator and will now coach the outside linebackers with JT Haddan being named the Defensive Run Game Coordinator. Cooper Bassett has also been named the Recruiting Coordinator.
