Carter, defense leads MSU past St. Edward’s

St. Edward’s entered D.L. Ligon Coliseum Thursday with one of the top scoring offenses in the Lone Star Conference, which seemed to be a challenge for a Midwestern State team allowing nearly 74 points per game.

Forget all that because the Mustangs defense was outstanding against the Hilltoppers in a 60-50 victory to end a four-game losing streak.

MSU held the potent SEU attack to 37.7 percent shooting from the floor, with the perimeter defense being most impressive. The Hilltoppers made only 3 of 14 attempts from three-point range.

“One of the things I did at the beginning of the year was to have an English lesson with them on the difference between affect and effect, trying to get them to understand how to affect someone’s shot,” MSU coach Justin Leslie said on the Lone Star Conference digital network. “You don’t hope they miss, you put a hand up, you have a good angle, you invade their space, you eat a bunch of garlic, and you yell ‘shot’ as loud as you can in their face, and you can make good shooter’s uncomfortable. So tonight was a very consistent effort on the defensive end of doing those little things.”

Jermane Carter hit 4 of 5 shots from 3-point range to lead the Mustangs with 20 points, while freshman Jordan Teal added 15 points for MSU.

“St. Edward’s doesn’t have any shot blockers, so I kept telling our guys to go in there with bad intentions. I wanted our guys to go into the paint with reckless abandon and put them on the defensive so that we have the opportunity to get some easy looks.”

MSU returns to the dome on Saturday with a contest against St. Mary’s scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
