LORMAN, Miss. – A Mississippi native and former SWAC student-athlete, Thomas “Luke” Walker was tabbed as assistant coach / pitching coach with the Alcorn State University softball program, announced by head coach Josef Rankin.
Walker lettered in baseball at Mississippi Valley State. He’s from Collinsville, Mississippi where he played prep ball at West Lauderdale HS.
Most recently, Walker spent the 2019-20 year at East Mississippi CC where he served as Fastpitch Pitching Coach and recruiting coordinator.
“I am blessed to be given the opportunity to work alongside Coach Rankin and assist in furthering the success of the Alcorn State University softball team,” Walker said. “I am excited to once again be apart of the SWAC conference and am looking forward to this next year.”
Prior to EMCC, Walker served as head baseball coach at Lamar School in Meridian, Mississippi from 2015-19. He racked up a 61-36 record, which included back-to-back 20-win seasons. He coached Lamar to three consecutive playoff appearances including a pair of D2-AAAA semifinals.
Walker was named the MAIS Southeast D2-AAAA Coach of the Year in 2016.
“First of all, I appreciate the opportunity Dr. [Felecia] Nave and Mr. [Derek] Horne have given to our program. It has been a long time coming and I really appreciate them giving us another resource to help our program get better,” Rankin said. “It’s a bit of a historic moment for us to be able to make this hire. Coach Walker will give us another set of eyes to help our players develop. He’s played and coached in our conference and I believe that experience will be great for our program. We are happy to have Coach, Ms. Nikki and Avery join our Alcorn family.”
Walker began his professional career as an assistant baseball coach at his alma mater, MVSU for three seasons. He worked as a hitting, fielding and recruiting coordinator with the Delta Devils from 2011-14.
As a student-athlete, Walker was the Team Captain for the MVSU baseball squad. He earned a spot on the SWAC All-Academic Team and won a Commissioner’s Scholar Award. Walker was a two-year letterwinner with the Delta Devils in 2010 & 2011 after playing his first two years at EMCC. At EMCC, he hit for a team-high .355 average and was an NJCAA Academic All-American.
Walker graduated with a bachelor’s in health, physical education & recreation in 2011, and a master’s in criminal justice administration in 2015 from MVSU.
He played high school ball at Wester Lauderdale HS where he led the team to a state championship and a No. 2 ranking in the nation. He was a 4-A All-State First-Team and All-District First-Team selection.
